Why Northern Seed

Cold country is clean country.

Winter gives our seed a clean start. North Dakota’s certification standards and our refusal to cut corners keep it clean all the way to your planter.

Long, hard winters reset the fields every year.

Winters here routinely reach −20°F or colder. When the ground freezes that hard for that long, leftover tubers that would sprout as volunteers (a common hiding place for virus) rarely survive, and the insects that spread disease have a much harder time carrying over to the next season.

Summers are short and mild, too, which gives aphids and other insect vectors less time to build up and spread virus.

“North Dakota is known for vigorous, disease-free seed potatoes grown in a climate that favors seed quality.”

North Dakota State Seed Department
01

State-Certified Seed

North Dakota inspects 10,000 to 15,000 acres of seed potatoes a year, the second-largest certification program in the US. Growers pushed for its strict disease tolerances themselves, and every field we grow is held to them.

02

Hawaii Winter Grow-Out

After harvest, a sample of every lot is planted near Waialua, Hawaii, on land owned by North Dakota’s certified seed growers association. It’s grown out over the winter and checked for virus, before buyers plant a single acre.

03

Generation Management

Close tracking of field years, rotation, and monitoring delivers consistent seed quality growers can plan around.

Our protocols

Strict biosecurity, field to truck.

From planting through storage and shipping, we follow strict biosecurity protocols: clean equipment, controlled field access, and constant sanitation, so the advantages our climate gives us aren’t lost along the way.

Measured, not promised

Gentle handling, backed by numbers.

Bruises and cuts open the door to rot and weaken a seed piece before it ever reaches your planter. So we measure impact force through harvest, storage, and loading with IRD impact sensors, and set our drop heights from what they record. Every lot is also bruise-tested several times a season, so we can find where damage happens and fix it before your seed ships.

Our Farm

Six generations on the same northern ground.

Johnson Farms is a family operation in Walhalla, North Dakota. We grow certified seed potatoes on the northern edge of the Red River Valley, pairing generations of experience with close attention to quality and disease management.

From field selection and rotation to in-season monitoring and clean handling, every step aims at one thing: seed that performs for the growers who plant it.

Our Story

Two brothers, one piece of ground.

Bert

Every farm has a few people who shaped it more than anyone else. For us, that was Lyle and his brother Bert.

They took the ground earlier generations had broken and built it into something more, through long days in the field and hard northern winters, always side by side.

What they left us is more than acres. It’s a way of working: fix it right the first time, take care of the soil, treat people fairly, and stand behind your word. We still farm this land the way they taught us.

Our Values

Rooted in more than the soil.

The way we farm comes from what we believe. Our values have guided Johnson Farms from the beginning, and they’re what we intend to hand down to the generations still to come.

I.

Faith

We believe every harvest is a gift. Our faith shapes how we treat people, how we do business, and how we stay grounded through good years and hard ones alike.

II.

Family

Our family has always worked this ground together. Family is the heart of our operation — and the growers we serve become part of that story, too.

III.

Stewardship of the Land

This land was entrusted to us, not just given. We carry a duty to care for the soil through thoughtful rotation and responsible practices, so it stays healthy and productive for generations to come.

IV.

Service

Your crop starts with our seed. We work to earn your trust every season with honest dealings, dependable quality, and the best value we can provide — because your success is our success.
